Backpacking
Backpacking with a tent and a sleeping bag is one of the
purest forms of camping, in that it is probably closest to the
type of pioneering, exploring and adventure experience that our
forefathers and ancestors did when life was much harder and
simpler.
If you go back a hundred or two hundred years
ago, tents and other camping equipment were very often
home-made and hand sewn. That's very different from the
almost overwhelming choices we have today of camping and
backpacking equipment.
It is all comparitively cheap and easily available from
everywhere from the K-Marts and Wall Mart stores to specialist
camping and outdoors suppliers.
The way you choose to go depends on your experience and
comfort level and your personal budget. But you can expect
these variables to morph with time.
Once you've gained more experience backpacking and camping
out, you'll become more selective with what you choose to take
along with you on a hike. that's good because having more
experience under your belt means you will be able to make
better choices for next time.
It is one area where having good-quality camping and
backpacking gear can mean the difference between a fun time to
remember or a miserable nightmare you would like to forget.
